In the reign of Darius the Mede, in the land of Babylon, it seemed good to establish a government of 120 satraps to rule the nation, with 3 commissioners over them. Daniel the Israelite, taken captive years earlier from Judah, was one of the commissioners. Jealousy overcame the other two commissioners and many satraps, for Daniel possessed an extraordinary spirit. Setting a trap for Daniel, King Darius was tricked into signing a rule that no one could make a petition to any god or man except to Darius. This fed the kings ego but, as is often the case, there came with it unforeseen repercussions. Daniel prayed three times a day. He would go to his house, open the windows facing to Jerusalem, pray and give thanks to Jehovah three times each day. Of course he was found out, reported to the king and faced the punishment of being thrown in the lions den. And Jehovah sent an angel to shut the lions mouths, delivering him in a dramatic way.
The point I want to make here is, as is so often the case in scripture, Daniel was no stranger to God. He was no stranger to the scriptures. He was no stranger to prayer. Though the nation of Israel often turned away from Jehovah, individual people were still found to be trusting in God and His holy word. Psalms 19.7-8 says “the law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul.” Psalms 9.1 “I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart, I will tell of all Thy wonders.” These and many other scriptures are typical of the things that Daniel was familiar with and prayed to his LORD. I believe Danial opened the windows so that he could be seen by God and man. Unashamed of the truth of who God is.
John 6.68 When many of Jesus disciples turned away and were no longer following Him because of difficult teachings of Jesus, words that cut to the heart of the matter of life and death, Jesus turned to His twelve and asked if they wanted to leave also. Simon Peter answered, ” Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Daniel felt the same way, after being with the King of Kings, and seeing him work in your life and the lives of countless others, how could you turn away?
Friends we are entering into some perilous times, draw ever closer to Jehovah, study the word of God, pray earnestly for yourself and your friends and family. Don’t be a stranger to God, scripture, or prayer. He wants to see you.
