Ephesians 2:8-10  “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works, so that no one may boast.  For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”

Devotional Thought:  We often talk about God’s grace.  We can talk about God’s grace as a gift we don’t deserve.  We often talk about Jesus and the cross and that there is nothing on our part that we can do with regard to salvation.  Today, I want to focus on the last part of this passage…”created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life”.  What does is mean to be “created in Christ Jesus for good works”?

This text emphasizes that our salvation is not from works (and I believe this to be true), it also understands works to be an indispensible component of God’s grace. To be created in Christ Jesus means that we are the handiwork of God – individuals made alive in Christ.  And as God’s handiwork, we are therefore created with the goal of good works. Good works that are to be our way of life.  In the Book of James we find…faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.  But someone will say, You have faith; I have deeds.  Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.  You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.” (James 2:17-19)

If we stop for just a moment and think about this thing called grace…it reinforces the  enormity of God’s mercy and love to want a new life for Christians. It also should remind us of the work God in Christ by his Holy Spirit seeks to see lived out in our works with others who do not yet know the Jesus you know.
