Romans 13:11-14The Message (MSG)
11-14 But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!
Recently I was reading the story of the wise men visiting King Herod, and I was gripped by the dynamics of the story. A group of people from outside the religious realm are more in touch with the reality of what God is doing than the people who live in the city of God. While the priest and the teachers of the law knew exactly chapter and verse to be more precise of what God promised to do, the wise men were pursuing that with their whole being. It is that awareness of God’s doing that I desire. Not just knowing about God but really KNOWING and SEEING God in the day-to-day.
Balancing the know with the reality of God is a real struggle. We get caught in the fire of what is going on today, the things that we missed, the frustration of things not being perfect that we forget seeing what God is doing all around us.
Today I pray that we are awake this season. Awake to God’s spirit, awake to the amazing things that are happening all around us. Let this season be more than another Christmas season, but be a time when we are awake and aware to the reality of God in our daily lives.
